Influence
In the Oxford Dictionary, influence is defined as the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something.
Influence is a powerful thing. It can affect the very course of a person’s life; sometimes from a good life to a bad life.
Influence has a lot of factors which affect it but I will not be talking about that. Rather, I’ll be talking about differentiating the good influences amidst all the uprising bad influences in our society today.
It doesn’t mean that when your friends are fun to hang out with, they will help you be successful in life. More often than not, the more you’re actually having fun, the more you forget your purpose and the more ignorant you become. You’re having so much fun with your friends that you forget the things in your life which are of a much more higher priority. I’m not saying that it’s bad to have fun with your friends, but you have to be smart, if your friends are always doing things which clashes with those of higher priorities like studies, character, attitude and stuff, then these are the kind of friends which you have to avoid.
If you want to succeed in whatever things that you put your hands into, you have to remember that you can never do it alone. You need to have friends who have the same mindset and the same vision or goal. You have to remember that your friends define you. The people you hang out with will determine who you are. That’s the power of influence you see.
Hence, if you hang out with stupid ignorant good-for-nothings then you will be a stupid ignorant good-for-nothing as well. And then there’s this other saying as well that if you follow stupid ignorant good-for-nothings then you’re more of a stupid ignorant good-for-nothing as well compared to them.
Get what I mean?
If that’s the case then you should have a strong character and personality so that even if you go in to cliques, gangs and groups, you will stand out; you become incorruptible. But if you are ignorant to the things happening around you and only focus on the amount of fun that you are going to have, then you treading down a very dangerous path, a path which leads to destruction.
But if you are strong in character, you have strong convictions which you will never compromise, if you have a more powerful purpose in life, you will naturally influence people towards your cause. But if you are weak and ignorant, then others will influence you.
You see, influence is power.
Ignorance will lead you nowhere.
Rather, knowledge of your surrounding - who your friends are and their motives in life, a strong character, a strong will, a strong conviction and a strong purpose in life, these are the things which will provide you with the proper protection against those stupid ignorant good-for-nothing others who look at life as a free ride.
